Boulder Through a Local’s Eye: Kim Genung

As a mom, designer, and long-time creative, Locally Boulder Editor-in-Chief Kim Genung has an eye for the details that make everyday moments feel beautiful — whether it's a family hike, a farm-fresh brunch, or an afternoon on Pearl Street. With a background in hospitality, event planning, and interior design, Kim brings a unique blend of style and heart to everything she does — including her picks for the best of Boulder.

Here, she shares her go-to spots for food, fresh air, and inspiration — the places she comes back to again and again with her daughter, her husband, and her circle of creative friends. This is Boulder, through Kim’s eyes.

Boulder Farmers Market

Boulder County is home to some of the best farmers markets in the country. The Boulder Farmers Market, Louisville Farmers Market, and Erie Farmers Market are a few local favorites offering an abundance of produce and local goods from around the Front Range. With Boulder surrounded by so many farms, these markets are a staple of spring and summer weekends.

Breweries, Restaurants & Coffee Shops

Boulder is packed with incredible places to eat and drink — and the Flatiron views are just part of the charm. Kim’s go-to spots include Upslope Brewery, Avery Brewing Co., Pizzeria Alberico, Dushanbe Tea House, Oak at Fourteenth, and Boxcar Roasters. Whether you’re in the mood for wood-fired pizza, farm-to-table fare, or a great pour-over, Boulder delivers.

The Great Outdoors

Whether you like hiking, climbing, skiing, or just lounging by the creek, Boulder is home to some of the best outdoor experiences in the state. Favorites include Eldora Ski Area, Boulder Creek Path, and Chautauqua Park — each offering a different way to get outside and explore the local landscape.

Local Farms

There’s a reason Boulder is known for its farm-to-table dining scene. With thousands of acres of farmland across the Front Range, local produce is everywhere — especially at places like Cure Organic Farm, Ya Ya Farm & Orchard, and Black Cat Farm. Restaurants like Bramble & Hare, Blackbelly, Frasca Food and Wine, and Oak at Fourteenth all incorporate locally grown ingredients year-round.

Spa Days

If you’re in the mood to slow down and recharge, Boulder is home to some seriously dreamy spas. Two of Kim’s favorites include Woodhouse Spa Boulder and Miori Luxury Head Spa — both known for their relaxing treatments and beautiful interiors.

Shopping on Pearl

Pearl Street has it all — sidewalk performers, sunny patios, and some of Kim’s favorite locally owned boutiques. Her top picks? Flower Wild, Peppercorn, and Jones & Co Modern Mercantile for curated home goods, gifts, and local finds.

Chautauqua Park

Watching the sun set over the Flatirons is a ritual in Boulder — and Chautauqua is one of the best places to do it. Kim loves this spot for picnics, dog walks, and concerts at the Chautauqua Auditorium. It’s a must-visit, whether you live here or are just passing through.

Dushanbe Tea House

This one deserves a second mention. Boulder’s Dushanbe Tea House is unlike anywhere else — hand-carved, hand-painted, and gifted to the city by Boulder’s sister city in Tajikistan. The garden is peaceful, the menu is globally inspired, and reservations are always a good idea. It’s one of Kim’s favorite places to relax and catch up with friends.

From market mornings and spa afternoons to creekside hikes and Flatiron sunsets, Kim’s picks reflect what makes Boulder such a special place to live, raise a family, and explore. These aren’t just her favorite spots — they’re part of her rhythm, her weekends, and the reason she created Locally Boulder in the first place.
