Balto Farms: The Boulder Farm You'll Want to Visit All Summer Long
A Historic Farm with Deep Boulder Roots
Just a few miles southeast of downtown Boulder, you'll find Balto Farms—a place where history and community come together.
Originally established in 1870, Balto Farms is one of Boulder's oldest remaining farm properties. When Chris and Jen Anderson purchased the farm in 2015, they envisioned more than restoring a historic landmark. Their goal was to preserve its agricultural legacy while creating a place where people could gather, celebrate, and connect. Today, the beautifully restored property is home to vibrant flower fields, lavender fields, workshops, photography sessions, seasonal events, and a thoughtfully curated farm store.
Like many Colorado farms, Balto Farms has faced a difficult growing season as ongoing drought conditions continue to impact what can be grown. Every flower blooming in the fields is the result of months of care and hard work. By visiting the farm, attending an event, shopping the market, or booking a session, you're helping preserve one of Boulder's most treasured historic farms for future generations.
Golden Hour, Gatherings, and Summer Fridays on the Farm
One of the most magical ways to experience Balto Farms is during its Friday evening U-pick flower experiences, offered throughout the summer. For $45 per person, guests are invited to wander the flower fields, handpick a beautiful bouquet to take home, and soak in one of Boulder's most picturesque settings as the sun begins to set.
It's the perfect excuse to slow down and make an evening of it. Bring a picnic blanket, pack your a charcuterie board, uncork a bottle of wine (where permitted, and gather your girlfriends for an evening that feels equal parts relaxing and unforgettable. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, catching up with friends, or simply looking for a different way to spend a Friday night, Balto Farms offers the kind of experience that reminds you how special Colorado summers can be.
A Photographer's Dream
Throughout the season, Balto Farms also welcomes photographers and their clients to reserve the property for portrait sessions. The thoughtfully planted flower fields, historic farm buildings, mountain views, and ever-changing blooms create an incredible backdrop for nearly every milestone.
From family portraits and maternity sessions to engagements, senior photos, branding shoots, and anniversary sessions, the farm offers a setting that feels both timeless and uniquely Colorado. Several local photographers also host seasonal mini sessions at the farm, making it an easy way to capture updated family photos while supporting a local business.
If you're a photographer looking for your next location—or simply dreaming of portraits surrounded by flowers—Balto Farms offers one of the most beautiful natural studios in Boulder County. Whether you're planning a photo session, organizing a private event, or gathering friends for a Friday evening in the flower fields, every visit helps support a historic local farm and the ongoing work of preserving this beautiful piece of Boulder for seasons to come.
