5 Best Day Trips from Boulder (That Are Totally Worth the Drive)

Day Trips from Boulder Colorado | Locally Boulder | Garden of the Gods

Even with its hiking trails, food scene, and unbeatable mountain views, sometimes you just want to hit the road and explore somewhere new — without packing a bag. That’s where a good day trip comes in.

Luckily, Boulder is surrounded by a long list of drive-worthy destinations. Whether you’re craving mountain views, boutique shopping, fresh air, or just an excuse to play tourist, these quick escapes offer a full change of pace, all within a couple hours of home.

Here are five of our favorite Boulder-approved day trips — each one perfect for a Saturday adventure, a spontaneous weekday off, or showing out-of-town guests a little extra Colorado magic.

Estes Park + Rocky Mountain National Park

Drive time: ~1 hour
Estes Park is one of Colorado’s most iconic mountain towns, and for good reason — charming main street, elk sightings, and easy access to Rocky Mountain National Park. Start your day with a coffee and a walk around town, then head into the park for scenic drives or one of the many hikes with serious postcard views.

If you’re into spooky history, swing by the Stanley Hotel (yes, The Shining one), and if you’re into ice cream… hit Hayley’s for a scoop on the way out.

Fort Collins

Drive time: ~1 hour
Fort Collins gives college town energy with a side of craft beer and bike trails. It’s laid-back and creative, with a walkable downtown full of local shops, breweries, and coffee spots. Tour New Belgium Brewing, rent a cruiser bike, or grab brunch at The Urban Egg before poking around boutiques and bookstores.

If Boulder had a fun cousin, it would be Fort Collins.

Nederland

Drive time: ~40 minutes
Quirky, artsy, and unapologetically weird, Nederland is Boulder’s offbeat mountain sibling. The drive up Boulder Canyon alone is worth it, and once you get there, you’ll find cozy coffee shops, crystal stores, scenic hiking, and the beloved Carousel of Happiness — a restored 1910 carousel that’s a hit with both kids and nostalgic adults.

Don’t miss lunch at The Train Cars Coffee and Yogurt Company — yes, it’s literally inside old train cars.

Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs

Drive time: ~2 hours
It’s a bit of a longer haul, but if you’re up for the drive, Garden of the Gods is a can’t-miss natural wonder. Towering red rock formations stretch across the horizon, and there are easy walking trails for all levels. It’s free to enter, totally stunning, and feels like another planet in the best way possible.

If you have extra time, swing by Manitou Springs after for lunch and a wander through this artsy little mineral-spring town.

Golden

Drive time: ~45 minutes
For a mix of small-town charm and riverfront walks, Golden is an easy go-to. The historic downtown is filled with cafes, boutiques, and beer halls, and Clear Creek runs right through it — perfect for a short hike or just relaxing by the water. You can also tour the Coors Brewery, or skip the tour and head straight to Golden Mill, a modern food hall with rooftop views and rotating food trucks.

It’s Boulder’s laid-back neighbor that always delivers a good time.

Sometimes a short drive is all it takes to shake up your routine. These quick escapes from Boulder pack in the views, good food, and fresh perspective — no suitcase necessary.
